Angus McNaughton

Angus is a tutor of audio engineering and music production at the Music and Audio Institute of New Zealand (MAINZ). He specialises in the ‘finishing’ end of music production and enjoys the challenge of bringing together the elements of songwriting in to a final mix.

A recording and mastering engineer, Angus produced and co-wrote hip-hop/reggae kiwi musician Che Fu’s hit song Chains and received Best Producer Tui at the New Zealand Music Awards in 2005 for his work in the production of electronica/pop rock musician SJD’s Southern Lights album. Recently, Angus has worked on Downtimeby pop/hip-hop band Kidz in Space that reached number one on the Independent Music New Zealand singles and airplay charts.

On top of many hard years of industry experience, Angus is a Certified Pro Tools Operator and has a National Certificate in Adult Learning and Teaching.

“Teaching at MAINZ is great because it keeps me engaged in the fast changing landscape of audio engineering. Sharing ideas is always interesting, and MAINZ has an excellent community atmosphere with so many talented people around, it's hard not to be inspired by that,” says Angus.

Outside of MAINZ, Angus is involved in audio mastering, composition of his own music, and photography.

Chip Matthews

Chip Matthews is the perfect example of a person working in an industry he loves. During the day he is the receptionist and administration assistant for MAINZ in Auckland and in his spare time he lives and breathes music.
As an in-demand Bass player he currently plays for Anika Moa, HomeBrew and Tyra Hammond. He has also played live or in studio with musicians like Ladi6, Opensouls, King Kapisi, Scribe and Sola Rosa. If that is not enough he is also a part-time DJ and host of Base FM’s breakfast show.
Chip can give students “real life” advice about working as a musician. He says if you have to have a job it is so much more rewarding when it is in a field that you are passionate about. If he is not at MAINZ he is probably either gigging or working as a DJ.
