STAR (Secondary Tertiary Alignment Resource) are a series of courses that help students move from high school to a tertiary provider, like a polytechnic. These courses run during the school holidays, normally for one week and are applied for through your high school careers advisor.
Audio Engineering
This programme is designed to give secondary school students an introduction to the theory and practice of studio recording and mixing.
Students will acquire the skills to operate small and medium sized recording equipment within operational specifications.
Core Elements
History of recording technology, sequencing, hard disk recording, gain structure, sound theory, sound perception and measurement, mixing console operation, studio personnel and microphone placement/technique.
The student will learn the practical skills involved in operating a recording studio and software recording programmes. Over the course of four days each student will participate in the recording of other students, culminating in a CD of all the student projects done in the week.

This programme is designed to give students an introduction to the theory and practice of live sound mixing and lighting. The students will acquire the skills to operate the school’s sound system and lighting rig with confidence and within health and safety guidelines.
Core Elements
Microphones, lighting boards, mixing consoles, light fittings, equalisation, lighting technology, amplifiers, stage management, loudspeakers and crossovers, backline equipment, compressors and noise gates, sound wave theory and effects, live mixing.
The student will learn the practical skills involved in setting up and operating a sound system and lighting rig. On the final day of the programme the students will provide production for a performance by a musical group.

The student attains the 5 credits by completing 25 hours on the course and by completing a further 25 hours at school. The school then needs to send a letter confirming that the hours have been completed.
